Deryll’s work is inspired by the landscape and its plants.
The most interesting plants are the ones we call weeds and which are so often despised. But weeds have been with us for thousands of years and are part of our culture. They provided food, medicine, clothing and dyes, and indeed still do.
Without them we would probably not be here and our culture would certainly be the poorer. The aim is to show the worth of these plants in the textile pieces.
The work is begun using natural fabrics. They are coloured using paints and commercial or natural plant dyes. The fabric is then stitched, manipulated, coloured again and more stitching added until the desired effect is achieved.
